Caffeine is the world's most-used performance aid, and for good reason: it reliably improves alertness, perceived effort and training output. But the difference between helpful and horrible is entirely in the dose — and the clock.
The numbers that matter
Most healthy adults handle up to around 400 mg per day comfortably — roughly four mugs of coffee. For performance, research supports moderate pre-training doses; more is not better, and beyond a point extra caffeine adds only jitters, anxiety and a racing heart.
It all adds up
Here's where people get caught out. A strong high-stim pre-workout such as ABE, Menace or Black Blood CAF+ can contain a large share of your sensible daily total on its own. Stack it with a thermogenic like Shred-X or Grenade's Thermo Detonator, plus your morning coffees, and you can sail past comfortable limits without noticing. Pick one primary caffeine source around training and count the rest of your day honestly.
Protect your sleep
Caffeine's half-life is five to six hours, meaning half of your 4 pm scoop is still circulating at 10 pm. Evening trainers should consider low-stim options: creatine, electrolytes, or a stimulant-free pump product does the job without wrecking recovery — and recovery is where progress actually happens.
Who should be extra careful
High-caffeine products are unsuitable for under-18s and during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and anyone with a heart condition or caffeine sensitivity should speak to a professional first. Labels state caffeine content per serving — read them.
